Just savor this definition from Webster's 1828 Dictionary:

PICK'THANK, n. An officious fellow who does what he is not desired to do, for the sake of gaining favor; a whispering parasite.

How could so many Congress critters be described with such economy of language?

BTW, for even more delicious disparagement, Google "Shakespearean insults" for an array of pages serving up customized sneers from the Bard. Sample: "Thou qualling rough-hewn clotpole!"

I actually have a t-shirt that lists the Shakespearean insults. A souvenir of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. It requires, however, that people peer at my bosom to read the text. That once was probably an invitation to culture. I'm not so sure of the appeal now, however.
